Book of Revelation, Chapter 1
Revelation 1 NWT - New World TranslationChapter 1 of Revelation—New World Translation (NWT)
- ¶ A revelation[a]1 by Jesus Christ, which God gave him,2 to show his slaves3 the things that must shortly[b] take place.4 And he sent forth his angel5 and presented [it] in signs6 through him to his slave John,7
- who bore witness to the word God gave8 and to the witness Jesus Christ gave,9 even to all the things he saw.
- Happy10 is he who reads aloud11 and those who hear the words of this prophecy,12 and who observe the things written in it;13 for the appointed time is near.14
- ¶ John to the seven congregations15 that are in the [district of] Asia:
¶ May YOU have undeserved kindness and peace from “The One who is[c] and who was and who is coming,”16 and from the seven spirits17 that are before his throne, - and from Jesus Christ, “the Faithful Witness,”18 “The firstborn from the dead,”19 and “The Ruler of the kings of the earth.”20
¶ To him that loves us21 and that loosed us from our sins by means of his own blood22— - and he made us to be a kingdom,23 priests24 to his God and Father—yes, to him be the glory and the might forever.25 Amen.
- ¶ Look! He is coming with the clouds,26 and every eye will see him,27 and those who pierced him;28 and all the tribes of the earth will beat themselves in grief because of him.29 Yes, Amen.
- ¶ “I am the Alʹpha and the O·meʹga,”[d]30 says Jehovah[e] God, “the One who is and who was and who is coming,31 the Almighty.”[f]32
- ¶ I John, YOUR brother and a sharer with YOU in the tribulation33 and kingdom34 and endurance35 in company with Jesus,36 came to be in the isle that is called Patʹmos for speaking about God and bearing witness[g] to Jesus.[h]37
- By inspiration[i]38 I came to be39 in the Lord’s day,[j]40 and I heard behind me a strong voice41 like that of a trumpet,
- saying: “What you see write42 in a scroll and send it to the seven congregations,43 in Ephʹe·sus44 and in Smyrʹna45 and in Perʹga·mum46 and in Thy·a·tiʹra47 and in Sarʹdis48 and in Philadelphia49 and in La·o·di·ceʹa.”50
- ¶ And I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me, and, having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands,51
- and in the midst of the lampstands someone like a son of man,52 clothed with a garment that reached down to the feet, and girded at the breasts with a golden girdle.
- Moreover, his head and his hair were white53 as white wool, as snow, and his eyes as a fiery flame;54
- and his feet were like fine copper55 when glowing in a furnace; and his voice56 was as the sound of many waters.
- And he had in his right hand seven stars,57 and out of his mouth a sharp, long two-edged sword58 was protruding, and his countenance was as the sun when it shines in its power.59
- And when I saw him, I fell as dead at his feet.
¶ And he laid his right hand upon me and said: “Do not be fearful.60 I am the First[k]61 and the Last,62 - and the living one;63 and I became dead,64 but, look! I am living forever and ever,65 and I have the keys of death66 and of Haʹdes.[l]67
- Therefore write down the things you saw, and the things that are and the things that will take place after these.68
- As for the sacred secret of the seven stars69 that you saw upon my right hand, and [of] the seven golden lampstands:70 The seven stars mean[m] [the] angels of the seven congregations, and the seven lampstands mean seven congregations.71
