Book of Psalms, No. 139
Psalms 139 NWT - New World TranslationNo. 139 of the Psalms—New World Translation (NWT)
- ¶ O Jehovah, you have searched through me, and you know [me].1
- ¶ You yourself have come to know my sitting down and my rising up.2
You have considered my thought from far off.3 - ¶ My journeying and my lying outstretched you have measured off,4
And you have become familiar even with all my ways.5 - ¶ For there is not a word on my tongue,6
But, look! O Jehovah, you already know it all.7 - ¶ Behind and before, you have besieged me;
And you place your hand upon me. - ¶ [Such] knowledge is too wonderful for me.8
It is so high up that I cannot attain to it.9 - ¶ Where can I go from your spirit,[a]10
And where can I run away from your face?11 - ¶ If I should ascend to heaven, there you would be;12
And if I should spread out my couch in Sheʹol,[b] look! you [would be there].13 - ¶ Were I to take the wings14 of the dawn,
That I might reside in the most remote sea,15 - ¶ There, also, your own hand would lead me16
And your right hand would lay hold of me.17 - ¶ And were I to say: “Surely darkness itself will hastily seize me!”18
Then night would be light about me.19 - ¶ Even the darkness itself would not prove too dark for you,20
But night itself would shine just as the day does;21
The darkness might just as well be the light.[c]22 - ¶ For you yourself produced my kidneys;23
You kept me screened off in the belly of my mother.24 - ¶ I shall laud you because in a fear-inspiring way I am wonderfully made.25
Your works are wonderful,26
As my soul is very well aware.27 - ¶ My bones were not hidden from you28
When I was made in secret,29
When I was woven in the lowest parts[d]30 of the earth. - ¶ Your eyes saw even the embryo of me,31
And in your book all its parts were down in writing,
¶ As regards the days when they were formed32
And there was not yet one among them. - ¶ So, to me how precious your thoughts are!33
O God,[e] how much does the grand sum of them amount to!34 - ¶ Were I to try to count them, they are more than even the grains of sand.35
I have awaked,[f] and yet I am still with you.36 - ¶ O that you, O God,[g] would slay the wicked one!37
Then even the bloodguilty men[h]38 will certainly depart from me, - ¶ Who say things about you according to [their] idea;39
They have taken up [your name] in a worthless way40—your adversaries.41 - ¶ Do I not hate those who are intensely hating you, O Jehovah,42
And do I not feel a loathing for those revolting against you?43 - ¶ With a complete hatred I do hate them.44
They have become to me real enemies.45 - ¶ Search through me, O God,[i] and know my heart.46
Examine me, and know my disquieting thoughts,47 - ¶ And see whether there is in me any painful way,48
And lead me in the way49 of time indefinite.
