Book of Nahum, Chapter 1
Nahum 1 NWT - New World Translation Chapter 1 of Nahum—New World Translation (NWT)
- ¶ The pronouncement against Ninʹe·veh:1 The book of the vision of Naʹhum the Elʹkosh·ite:[a]
- ¶ Jehovah is a God[b] exacting exclusive devotion2 and taking vengeance; Jehovah is taking vengeance3 and is disposed to[c] rage.4 Jehovah is taking vengeance against his adversaries,5 and he is resentful toward his enemies.6
- ¶ Jehovah is slow to anger7 and great in power,8 and by no means will Jehovah hold back from punishing.9
¶ In destructive wind and in storm is his way, and the cloud mass is the powder of his feet.10 - ¶ He is rebuking the sea,11 and he dries it up; and all the rivers he actually makes run dry.12
¶ Baʹshan and Carʹmel have withered,13 and the very blossom of Lebʹa·non has withered. - ¶ Mountains themselves have rocked because of him, and the very hills found themselves melting.14
¶ And the earth will be upheaved because of his face; the productive land also,[d] and all those dwelling in it.15 - ¶ In the face of his denunciation who can stand?16 And who can rise up against the heat of his anger?17
¶ His own rage will certainly be poured out like fire,18 and the very rocks[e] will actually be pulled down because of him. - ¶ Jehovah is good,19 a stronghold20 in the day of distress.21
¶ And he is cognizant of those seeking refuge in him.22 - ¶ And by the flood that is passing along he will make an outright extermination of her[f] place,23 and darkness will pursue his very enemies.[g]24
- ¶ What will YOU men think up against Jehovah?25 He is causing an outright extermination.
¶ Distress will not rise up a second time.26 - ¶ Although they are being interwoven even as thorns27 and they are drunken as with their wheat beer,[h]28 they will certainly be devoured like stubble fully dry.29
- ¶ Out of you[i] there will actually go forth one who is thinking up against Jehovah what is bad,30 counseling what is not worth while.[j]31
- ¶ This is what Jehovah has said: “Although they were in complete form and there were many in that state, even in that state they must be cut down;32 and one must pass through. And I shall certainly afflict you, so that I shall not afflict you anymore.33
- And now I shall break his carrying bar from upon you,34 and the bands upon you I shall tear in two.35
- And concerning you[k] Jehovah has commanded, ‘Nothing of your name will be sown anymore.36 Out of the house of your gods[l] I shall cut off carved image and molten statue.37 I shall make a burial place for you,38 because you have been of no account.’[m]
- ¶ “Look! Upon the mountains the feet of one bringing good news,[n] one publishing peace.39 O Judah, celebrate your festivals.40 Pay your vows;41 because no more will any good-for-nothing person[o] pass again through you.42 In his entirety he will certainly be cut off.”[p]43
