Chapter 4 of GenesisNew World Translation (NWT)

  1. ¶ Now Adam had intercourse with Eve his wife and she became pregnant.1 In time she gave birth to Cain[a]2 and said: “I have produced[b] a man with the aid of Jehovah.”3
  2. Later she again gave birth, to his brother Abel.4
¶ And Abel came to be a herder of sheep,5 but Cain became a cultivator of the ground.6
  3. And it came about at the expiration of some time[c] that Cain proceeded to bring some fruits of the ground7 as an offering to Jehovah.8
  4. But as for Abel, he too brought some firstlings9 of his flock, even their fatty pieces.10 Now while Jehovah was looking with favor upon Abel and his offering,11
  5. he did not look with any favor upon Cain and upon his offering.12 And Cain grew hot with great anger,13 and his countenance began to fall.
  6. At this Jehovah said to Cain: “Why are you hot with anger and why has your countenance fallen?
  7. If you turn to doing good, will there not be an exaltation?14 But if you do not turn to doing good, there is sin crouching at the entrance, and for you is its craving;15 and will you, for your part, get the mastery over it?”16
  8. ¶ After that Cain said to Abel his brother: [“Let us go over into the field.”][d] So it came about that while they were in the field Cain proceeded to assault Abel his brother and kill him.17
  9. Later on Jehovah said to Cain: “Where is Abel your brother?”18 and he said: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s guardian?”19
  10. At this he said: “What have you done? Listen![e] Your brother’s blood[f] is crying out to me from the ground.20
  11. And now you are cursed in banishment from the ground,21 which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood at your hand.22
  12. When you cultivate the ground, it will not give you back its power.[g]23 A wanderer and a fugitive you will become in the earth.”24
  13. At this Cain said to Jehovah: “My punishment for error is too great to carry.
  14. Here you are actually driving me this day from off the surface of the ground, and from your face I shall be concealed;25 and I must become a wanderer26 and fugitive on the earth, and it is certain that anyone finding me will kill me.”27
  15. At this Jehovah said to him: “For that reason[h] anyone killing Cain must suffer vengeance seven times.”28
¶ And so Jehovah set up a sign for Cain in order that no one finding him should strike him.29
  16. With that Cain went away from the face of Jehovah30 and took up residence in the land of Fugitiveness[i] to the east of Eʹden.
  17. ¶ Afterward Cain had intercourse with his wife31 and she became pregnant and gave birth to Eʹnoch. Then he engaged in building a city and called the city’s name by the name of his son Eʹnoch.32
  18. Later there was born to Eʹnoch Iʹrad. And Iʹrad became father to Me·huʹja·el, and Me·huʹja·el became father to Me·thuʹsha·el, and Me·thuʹsha·el became father to Laʹmech.
  19. ¶ And Laʹmech proceeded to take two wives for himself. The name of the first was Aʹdah and the name of the second was Zilʹlah.
  20. In time Aʹdah gave birth to Jaʹbal. He proved to be the founder of those who dwell in tents33 and have livestock.34
  21. And the name of his brother was Juʹbal. He proved to be the founder[j] of all those who handle the harp35 and the pipe.[k]36
  22. As for Zilʹlah, she too gave birth to Tuʹbal-cain, the forger[l] of every sort of tool of copper and iron.37 And the sister of Tuʹbal-cain was Naʹa·mah.
  23. Consequently Laʹmech composed[m] these words for his wives Aʹdah and Zilʹlah:
    ¶ “Hear my voice, you wives of Laʹmech;
      Give ear to my saying:[n]
    ¶ A man[o] I have killed for wounding me,[p]
Yes, a young man for giving me a blow.[q]
  24. ¶ If seven times Cain is to be avenged,38
Then Laʹmech seventy times and seven.”
  25. ¶ And Adam proceeded to have intercourse again with his wife and so she gave birth to a son and called his name Seth,[r]39 because, as she said: “God has appointed another seed[s] in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.”40
  26. And to Seth also there was born a son and he proceeded to call his name Eʹnosh.41 At that time a start was made[t] of calling on the name of Jehovah.42

FOOTNOTES

  1. ^ Meaning “Something Produced.” Eve explains why she gave him this name.
  2. ^ “I have produced.” Heb., qa·ni·thiʹ (from qa·nahʹ, “to produce”).
  3. ^ Lit., “of days.”
  4. ^ SamLXXItSy insert these bracketed words; Vg, “Let us go outdoors”; M omits; some mss and editions have an interval here.
  5. ^ Lit., “The voice of.”
  6. ^ Lit., “bloods,” modified by “crying.”
  7. ^ Or, “produce.” Heb., ko·chahʹ.
  8. ^ “For that reason.” Heb., la·khenʹ; LXXSyVg take the original Heb. text to read loʼ khen and hence translate it, “Not so!”
  9. ^ Or, “Nod.”
  10. ^ Lit., “father.”
  11. ^ Or, “flute.” Possibly a combination of musical pipes.
  12. ^ Lit., “hammerer.”
  13. ^ “Consequently . . . composed.” Lit., “And . . . proceeded to say,” in the imperfect. (See App 3C.) The verb “compose” is appropriate in this instance because what he proceeded to produce was poetic.
  14. ^ Or, “my song (poem).” Heb., ʼim·ra·th. In the Scriptures this word is used in poetic compositions.
  15. ^ The Heb. particle ki preceding the word ʼish, “a man,” is merely introductory to the poem and hence does not need to be translated.
  16. ^ Lit., “for my wound.”
  17. ^ Lit., “for my blow.”
  18. ^ Meaning “Appointed; Put; Set,” in the sense of replacing or substituting.
  19. ^ Or, “offspring; posterity.”
  20. ^ Lit., “At that time it was started.”

The bible tells us to test the spirits. Satan disguises himself as angel of light. So yes some denomination are not teaching the truth. You are responsible for judging which ones are not. You have to judge the truth at all times. this is what the bible teaches

The NWT is a very good translation. Dr. Jason David BeDuhn PhD attests to that in his book Truth in Translation. drive.google.com/...5p16melHzg8/view

NWT is a false translation that takes away from the deity of Jesus !

Thank you for taking the time to provide this service. I like seeing the NASB on your web page in the same format as I read on paper. On other sites, the text area is smaller, and so I have to keep scrolling down to read and sometimes I lose the context. So I really appreciate the format.

As far as the NWT, you are certainly free to do whatever you think best with your own web pages. I'd suggest that you make a note anytime you have a translation that is associated with only one denomination or church, for example:
New World Translation (Jehovah's Witness version).

In Jesus' parable of the wheat and the tares. the main idea seems to be that you can't easily distinguish between God's people and not-God's people on this earth, so our Lord's response is to wait until they are shown to be the kind of people they are inside. But the NWT seems like false teaching to me. So I think the warning passages from Jesus' apostles are more applicable, as in 2 Peter 3:15-16, when he talks about Paul's writings:
"There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures."
And we also have the positive exhortations, as in 2 Timothy 2:15:
"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

Your suggestion regarding the denominational flagging is duly noted. But I can’t help but wonder, wouldn’t a Catholic also want “Protestant versions” marked as well?

As for the parable, I’m pretty sure the slaves were convinced in their own minds that they could tell the tares from the wheat. After all, aren’t they the ones who identified the problem in the first place? But the master obviously thought otherwise.

Furthermore, even at the time when Jesus himself was walking the earth, not everybody who claimed fellowship actually followed him causing John to inquire at Mark 9:39, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him . . . for he who is not against us is for us.”

Hello, question.. why have you included the NWT with other legitimate bible translations? Or why have you not atleast included a warning to readers? Don't you fear that someone could be influenced by the Watchtower's intentional heresies? Thank you.
