Chapter 22 of Exodus—New World Translation (NWT)

  1. ¶ “In case a man should steal a bull or a sheep and he does slaughter it or sell it, he is to compensate with five of the herd for the bull and four of the flock for the sheep.[a]1
  2. ¶ (“If a thief2 should be found in the act of breaking in3 and he does get struck and die, there is no bloodguilt[b] for him.4
  3. If the sun has shone forth upon him, there is bloodguilt for him.)
    ¶ “He is to make compensation without fail. If he has nothing, then he must be sold for the things he stole.5
  4. If there should be unmistakably found in his hand what was stolen, from bull to ass and to sheep, alive, he is to make double compensation.
  5. ¶ “If a man causes a field or a vineyard to be grazed over[c] and he does send out his beasts of burden and cause a consuming in another field, he is to make compensation6 with the best of his own field or with the best of his own vineyard.
  6. ¶ “In case a fire should spread out and it does catch thorns, and sheaves or standing grain or a field gets consumed,7 the one who started the fire is to make compensation without fail [for what was burned].
  7. ¶ “In case a man should give his fellow money or articles to keep,8 and it gets stolen from the man’s house, if the thief should be found, he is to make double compensation.9
  8. If the thief should not be found, then the owner of the house must be brought near to the [true] God10 to see whether he did not put his hand upon the goods of his fellow.
  9. As regards any case of transgression,11 concerning a bull, an ass, a sheep, a garment, anything lost of which he may say, ‘This is it!’ the case of them both is to come to the [true] God.[d]12 The one whom God[e] will pronounce[f] wicked is to make double compensation to his fellow.13
  10. ¶ “In case a man should give his fellow an ass or bull or sheep or any domestic animal to keep, and it does die or get maimed or gets led off while nobody is looking,
  11. an oath14 by Jehovah is to take place between them both that he did not put his hand on the goods of his fellow;15 and their owner[g] must accept it, and the other is not to make compensation.
  12. But if they should for a fact be stolen from him, he is to make compensation to their owner.[h]16
  13. If it should for a fact be torn by a wild beast,17 he is to bring it as evidence.18 For something torn by a wild beast he is not to make compensation.
  14. ¶ “But in case anybody should ask for something of his fellow,19 and it does get maimed or die while its owner is not with it, he is to make compensation without fail.20
  15. If its owner is with it, he is not to make compensation. If it is hired, it must come in its hire.
  16. ¶ “Now in case a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged, and he actually lies down with her,21 he is to obtain her without fail as his wife for the purchase price.22
  17. If her father flatly refuses to give her to him, he is to pay over the money at the rate of purchase money for virgins.23
  18. ¶ “You must not preserve a sorceress alive.24
  19. ¶ “Anyone lying down with a beast is positively to be put to death.25
  20. ¶ “One who sacrifices to any gods but Jehovah alone is to be devoted to destruction.[i]26
  21. ¶ “And you must not maltreat an alien resident[j] or oppress him,27 for YOU people became alien residents in the land of Egypt.28
  22. ¶ “YOU people must not afflict any widow or fatherless boy.29
  23. If you should afflict him at all, then if he cries out to me at all, I shall unfailingly hear his outcry;30
  24. and my anger will indeed blaze,31 and I shall certainly kill YOU with the sword, and YOUR wives must become widows and YOUR sons fatherless boys.32
  25. ¶ “If you should lend money to my people, to the afflicted alongside you,33 you must not become like a usurer to him. YOU must not lay interest upon him.34
  26. ¶ “If you should at all seize the garment of your fellow as a pledge,35 you are to return it to him at the setting of the sun.
  27. For it is his only covering.36 It is his mantle for his skin. In what will he lie down? And it must occur that he will cry out to me, and I shall certainly hear, because I am gracious.37
  28. ¶ “You must not call down evil upon God[k]38 nor curse a chieftain[l] among your people.39
  29. ¶ “Your full produce and the overflow of your press you must not give hesitantly.40 The firstborn of your sons you are to give to me.41
  30. The way you are to do with your bull and your sheep is this:42 Seven days it will continue with its mother.43 On the eighth day you are to give it to me.
  31. ¶ “And YOU should prove yourselves holy men to me;44 and YOU must not eat flesh in the field that is something torn by a wild beast.45 YOU should throw it to the dogs.46

    When i do read some comments and seeing that its the same people that are supposed to be called believers but are talking ill of other denominations, it hurts. Let us all remember that We should judge not

      The bible tells us to test the spirits. Satan disguises himself as angel of light. So yes some denomination are not teaching the truth. You are responsible for judging which ones are not. You have to judge the truth at all times. this is what the bible teaches

    Thank you for taking the time to provide this service. I like seeing the NASB on your web page in the same format as I read on paper. On other sites, the text area is smaller, and so I have to keep scrolling down to read and sometimes I lose the context. So I really appreciate the format.

    As far as the NWT, you are certainly free to do whatever you think best with your own web pages. I'd suggest that you make a note anytime you have a translation that is associated with only one denomination or church, for example:
    New World Translation (Jehovah's Witness version).

    In Jesus' parable of the wheat and the tares. the main idea seems to be that you can't easily distinguish between God's people and not-God's people on this earth, so our Lord's response is to wait until they are shown to be the kind of people they are inside. But the NWT seems like false teaching to me. So I think the warning passages from Jesus' apostles are more applicable, as in 2 Peter 3:15-16, when he talks about Paul's writings:
    "There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures."
    And we also have the positive exhortations, as in 2 Timothy 2:15:
    "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

      Your suggestion regarding the denominational flagging is duly noted. But I can’t help but wonder, wouldn’t a Catholic also want “Protestant versions” marked as well?

      As for the parable, I’m pretty sure the slaves were convinced in their own minds that they could tell the tares from the wheat. After all, aren’t they the ones who identified the problem in the first place? But the master obviously thought otherwise.

      Furthermore, even at the time when Jesus himself was walking the earth, not everybody who claimed fellowship actually followed him causing John to inquire at Mark 9:39, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him . . . for he who is not against us is for us.”

    Hello, question.. why have you included the NWT with other legitimate bible translations? Or why have you not atleast included a warning to readers? Don't you fear that someone could be influenced by the Watchtower's intentional heresies? Thank you.
