Chapter 6 of 1 Samuel—New World Translation (NWT)

  1. ¶ And the ark1 of Jehovah proved to be in the field of the Phi·lisʹtines seven months.[a]
  2. And the Phi·lisʹtines proceeded to call the priests and the diviners,2 saying: “What shall we do with the ark of Jehovah? Let us know with what we should send it away to its place.”
  3. To this they said: “If YOU are sending the ark of the God of Israel away, do not send it away without an offering, for YOU should by all means return to him a guilt offering.3 Then it is that YOU will be healed, and it must become known to YOU why his hand would not turn away from YOU.”
  4. At this they said: “What is the guilt offering that we ought to return to him?” Then they said: “According to the number of the axis lords4 of the Phi·lisʹtines, five golden piles and five golden jerboas,[b] for every one of YOU[c] and YOUR axis lords have the same scourge.[d]
  5. And YOU must make images of YOUR piles and images of YOUR jerboas5 that are bringing the land to ruin, and YOU must give glory6 to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will lighten his hand from off YOU and YOUR god and YOUR land.7
  6. Also, why should YOU make YOUR heart unresponsive just the way Egypt and Pharʹaoh made their heart unresponsive?8 Was it not as soon as He dealt severely with them9 that they proceeded to send them away, and they went their way?10
  7. And now take and make a new wagon,11 and two cows that are giving suck, upon which no yoke12 has come up, and YOU must hitch the cows to the wagon, and YOU must make their young ones[e] go back home from following them.
  8. And YOU must take the ark of Jehovah and place it on the wagon, and the golden articles13 that YOU must return to him as a guilt14 offering YOU should put into a box at the side of it. And YOU must send it away, and it must go.
  9. And YOU must look: if it is the road to its territory that it goes up, to Beth-sheʹmesh,15 it is he that has done to us this great evil; but if not, we must know that it was not his hand that touched us; an accident16 it was that happened to us.”
  10. ¶ And the men proceeded to do accordingly. So they took two cows that were giving suck and hitched them to the wagon, and their young ones they shut up at home.
  11. Then they put the ark of Jehovah upon the wagon,17 and also the box and the golden jerboas and the images of their piles.[f]
  12. And the cows began to go straight ahead[g] on the road to Beth-sheʹmesh.18 On the one highway they went, lowing as they went,[h] and they did not turn aside to the right or to the left. All the while the axis lords19 of the Phi·lisʹtines were walking after them as far as the boundary of Beth-sheʹmesh.
  13. And people of Beth-sheʹmesh were reaping the wheat harvest20 in the low plain. When they raised their eyes and saw the Ark, they gave way to rejoicing at seeing it.
  14. And the wagon itself came into the field of Joshua the Beth-sheʹmite and kept standing there, where there was a large stone. And they went splitting up the wood of the wagon, and the cows21 they offered up as a burnt offering to Jehovah.22
  15. ¶ And the Levites23 themselves took the ark of Jehovah down and the box that was with it, in which the golden articles were, and they proceeded to put it upon the large stone. And the men of Beth-sheʹmesh,24 for their part, offered up burnt offerings, and they continued rendering up sacrifices on that day to Jehovah.
  16. ¶ And the five axis25 lords of the Phi·lisʹtines themselves saw it and went their way back to Ekʹron on that day.
  17. Now these are the golden piles that the Phi·lisʹtines returned as a guilt offering to Jehovah:26 for Ashʹdod27 one, for Gaʹza28 one, for Ashʹke·lon29 one, for Gath30 one, for Ekʹron31 one.
  18. And the golden jerboas were to the number of all the cities of the Phi·lisʹtines belonging to the five axis lords, from the fortified city to the village of the open country.
    ¶ And the great stone[i] upon which they rested the ark of Jehovah is a witness[j] down to this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-sheʹmite.
  19. And he went striking down the men of Beth-sheʹmesh,[k]32 because they had looked upon the ark of Jehovah. So he struck down among the people seventy men—fifty thousand men[l]—and the people began mourning because Jehovah had struck down the people with a great slaughter.33
  20. Further, the men of Beth-sheʹmesh said: “Who will be able to stand before Jehovah this holy God,34 and to whom will he withdraw from off us?”35
  21. Finally they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirʹi·ath-jeʹa·rim,36 saying: “The Phi·lisʹtines have returned the ark of Jehovah. Come down. Take it up to yourselves.”37

TJ, “And he struck down seventy men among the older men of the people, and fifty thousand among the congregation”; LXX, “And he struck down seventy men among them, and fifty thousand of the men”; Josephus (Jewish Antiquities, Book VI, chapter 1, ¶4) mentions only 70 men as killed and omits any reference to 50,000.

    The NWT adds words to the text that are not in the greek Manuscripts to fit it's own doctrinal position for example

    Compare the wording of the NWT and the NKJV at Colossians 1:15-17

    NKJV says

    15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

    NWT says

    15 He is the image of the invisible God,the firstborn OF all creation;16 because by means of him all OTHER things were created in the heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible,whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All OTHER things have been created through him and for him. 17 Also, he is before all OTHER things,and by means of him all OTHER things were made to exist,

    The word “other” is not in the Greek but they add it Why? So they can decieve their followers into thinking that Christ was created by the Father and that he then created other things, that is not what the Greek says.

      Why didn’t you use the original kjv of col1:15?

      Is it because it disproves your point? It proves the opposite of what you wrote?

      Here is kjv col1:15 ¶” Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn OF every creature:“

      Now I appeal to your Christian nature to correct your mistake as God is watching each of us, and let us bless the God of Jesus his father.

    Joshua, Jehovah’s Witnesses have never denied the deity of the Messiah in his prehuman existence. While on Earth he was fully 100% human. I do not mean he was a mere human, he was not affected by Adam’s unfaithful behavior, he was sinless.

      The bible tells us to test the spirits. Satan disguises himself as angel of light. So yes some denomination are not teaching the truth. You are responsible for judging which ones are not. You have to judge the truth at all times. this is what the bible teaches

    Thank you for taking the time to provide this service. I like seeing the NASB on your web page in the same format as I read on paper. On other sites, the text area is smaller, and so I have to keep scrolling down to read and sometimes I lose the context. So I really appreciate the format.

    As far as the NWT, you are certainly free to do whatever you think best with your own web pages. I'd suggest that you make a note anytime you have a translation that is associated with only one denomination or church, for example:
    New World Translation (Jehovah's Witness version).

    In Jesus' parable of the wheat and the tares. the main idea seems to be that you can't easily distinguish between God's people and not-God's people on this earth, so our Lord's response is to wait until they are shown to be the kind of people they are inside. But the NWT seems like false teaching to me. So I think the warning passages from Jesus' apostles are more applicable, as in 2 Peter 3:15-16, when he talks about Paul's writings:
    "There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures."
    And we also have the positive exhortations, as in 2 Timothy 2:15:
    "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

      Your suggestion regarding the denominational flagging is duly noted. But I can’t help but wonder, wouldn’t a Catholic also want “Protestant versions” marked as well?

      As for the parable, I’m pretty sure the slaves were convinced in their own minds that they could tell the tares from the wheat. After all, aren’t they the ones who identified the problem in the first place? But the master obviously thought otherwise.

      Furthermore, even at the time when Jesus himself was walking the earth, not everybody who claimed fellowship actually followed him causing John to inquire at Mark 9:39, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him . . . for he who is not against us is for us.”

      Please site these intentional heresies. I am well versed in the watch tower outline and agree they are in many ways incorrect but i also bet i can point many out from EVERY established or main denomination. There is much to learn from them all as one who drinks milk?

      Judge not lest ye be judged, that is not to pass judgement on you either brother.

      I debate with scripture. I don't hold it to be true that Michael is Y'Shua HaMeshiach but I also firmly hold it to be true that our G-d and Heavenly Father are not the word encarnate and only begotten son.

      I love not seeing "lord" which i relate to baal. I feel the catholic church is a satanic establishment and I am aware a freemason started the hovies but there are evil in high places and our fight is also with principalities.

      What i'm saying is that in my darkest hours, those two were some of if not the only ones who would bring a Bible and eucharist and pray with me.

      We all fall short of the glory of G-d.

      Don't forget the NWT was recognized as the most accurate translation on Jeopardy.

      Lastly, this is different I noted than the NWT i have read and am very familiar with. Pull up the watchtower page and compare. I truly look forward to getting this one!
