Chapter 25 of 1 SamuelNew World Translation (NWT)

  1. ¶ In time Samuel1 died; and all Israel proceeded to collect together and bewail2 him and bury him at his house[a] in Raʹmah.3 Then David rose up and went down to the wilderness of Paʹran.[b]4
  2. ¶ Now there was a man in Maʹon,5 and his work was in Carʹmel.[c]6 And the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats; and he came to be [engaged] in shearing7 his sheep at Carʹmel.
  3. And the man’s name was Naʹbal,8 and his wife’s name was Abʹi·gail.9 And the wife was good in discretion10 and beautiful in form, but the husband was harsh and bad in his practices;11 and he was a Caʹleb·ite.12
  4. And David got to hear in the wilderness that Naʹbal was shearing13 his sheep.
  5. So David sent ten young men and David said to the young men: “Go up to Carʹmel, and YOU must come to Naʹbal and ask him in my name about his welfare.14
  6. And this is what YOU must say to my brother,[d] ‘May you be well15 and also your household be well and all that you have be well.
  7. And now I have heard that you have shearers. Now the shepherds that belong to you happened themselves to be with us.16 We did not molest them,17 and nothing at all showed up missing of theirs all the days they happened to be in Carʹmel.
  8. Ask your own young men, and they will tell you, that my[e] young men may find favor in your eyes, because it was upon a good day that we came.[f] Just give, please, whatever your hand may find to your servants and to your son David.’”18
  9. ¶ Accordingly David’s young men came and spoke to Naʹbal in accord with all these words in the name of David and then waited.
  10. At this Naʹbal answered David’s servants and said: “Who is David,19 and who is the son of Jesʹse? Nowadays the servants that are breaking away, each one from before his master,[g] have become many.20
  11. And do I have to take my bread21 and my water[h] and my slaughtered meat that I have butchered for my shearers and give it to men of whom I do not even know from where they are?”22
  12. ¶ Upon that David’s young men turned around on their way and went back and came and reported to him in accord with all these words.
  13. Immediately David said to his men: “Gird on every one his sword!”23 So they girded on every one his sword and David also girded on his own sword; and they began to go up after David, about four hundred men, while two hundred sat by the baggage.24
  14. ¶ Meanwhile, to Abʹi·gail, Naʹbal’s wife, one of the young men reported, saying: “Look! David sent messengers from the wilderness to wish our master well,[i] but he screamed rebukes25 at them.
  15. And the men were very good to us, and they did not molest us, and we did not miss a single thing all the days of our walking about with them while we happened to be in the field.26
  16. A wall27 was what they proved to be around us both by night and by day, all the days that we happened to be with them, shepherding the flock.
  17. And now know and see what you are going to do, for calamity has been determined28 against our master and against all his house, as he is too much of a good-for-nothing fellow[j]29 to speak to him.”
  18. ¶ At once Abʹi·gail30 hastened and took two hundred loaves of bread and two large jars of wine31 and five sheep dressed32 and five seah[k] measures of roasted33 grain and a hundred cakes of raisins34 and two hundred cakes of pressed figs35 and put them upon the asses.
  19. Then she said to her young men: “Pass on ahead of me.36 Look! I am coming after YOU.” But to her husband Naʹbal she told nothing.
  20. ¶ And it occurred that while she was riding on the ass37 and secretly going down the mountain, why, there were David and his men coming down to meet her. So she encountered them.
  21. As for David, he had said: “It was altogether for disappointment that I guarded everything that belongs to this fellow in the wilderness and not a single thing of all that belongs to him showed up missing,38 and yet he repays me evil in return for good.39
  22. So may God do to the enemies of David[l] and so may he add to it40 if I shall let anyone of all who are his that urinates against the wall[m]41 remain until the morning.”42
  23. ¶ When Abʹi·gail caught sight of David, she at once hastened and got down off the ass and fell upon her face before David and bowed43 to the earth.
  24. She then fell at his feet44 and said: “Upon me myself, O my lord, be the error;45 and, please, let your slave girl speak in your ears,46 and listen to the words of your slave girl.
  25. Please, do not let my lord set his heart upon this good-for-nothing47 man Naʹbal, for, as his name is, so is he. Naʹbal[n] is his name, and senselessness[o] is with him.48 As for me your slave girl, I did not see my lord’s young men that you had sent.
  26. And now, my lord, as Jehovah is living49 and as your soul is living,50 Jehovah has held you back51 from entering into bloodguilt[p]52 and having your own hand come to your salvation.[q]53 And now let your enemies and those seeking injury to my lord become like Naʹbal.54
  27. And now as regards this gift blessing55 that your maidservant has brought to my lord, it must be given to the young men that are walking about in the steps56 of my lord.
  28. Pardon, please, the transgression of your slave girl,57 because Jehovah will without fail make for my lord a lasting house,[r]58 because the wars of Jehovah are what my lord is fighting;59 and as for badness, it will not be found in you throughout your days.[s]60
  29. When man rises up to pursue you and look for your soul, the soul of my lord will certainly prove to be wrapped up in the bag of life61 with Jehovah your God;62 but, as for the soul of your enemies, he will sling it forth as from inside the hollow of the sling.63
  30. And it must occur that, because Jehovah will do to my lord the good toward you according to all that he has spoken, he certainly will commission you as leader over Israel.64
  31. And let this not become to you a cause for staggering[t] or a stumbling block to the heart of my lord, both by the shedding of blood without cause65 and by having [the hand of] my lord[u] [itself] come to his salvation.66 And Jehovah will certainly do good to my lord, and you must remember67 your slave girl.”
  32. ¶ At this David said to Abʹi·gail: “Blessed be Jehovah the God of Israel,68 who has sent you this day to meet me!
  33. And blessed be your sensibleness,69 and blessed be you who have restrained me this day from entering into bloodguilt70 and having my own hand come to my salvation.71
  34. And, on the other hand, as Jehovah the God of Israel is living, who has held me back from doing injury to you,72 if you had not hastened that you might come to meet me,73 there would certainly not have remained to Naʹbal until the morning light anyone urinating against a wall.”[v]74
  35. With that David accepted from her hand what she had brought him, and to her he said: “Go up in peace75 to your house. See, I have listened to your voice that I may have consideration76 for your person.”
  36. ¶ Later Abʹi·gail came in to Naʹbal, and there he was having a feast in his house like the feast of the king;77 and Naʹbal’s heart was feeling good within him, and he was as drunk78 as could be; and she did not tell him a thing, small or great, until the morning light.
  37. And it came about in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Naʹbal, that his wife went telling him these things. And his heart79 came to be dead inside him, and he himself became as a stone.
  38. After that about ten days elapsed and then Jehovah struck80 Naʹbal, so that he died.
  39. ¶ And David got to hear that Naʹbal had died, and so he said: “Blessed be Jehovah, who has conducted the legal81 case of my reproach82 [to free me] from Naʹbal’s hand and has kept his servant back from badness,83 and the badness of Naʹbal Jehovah has turned back upon his own head!”84 And David proceeded to send and propose to Abʹi·gail to take her as his wife.85
  40. So David’s servants came to Abʹi·gail at Carʹmel and spoke to her, saying: “David himself has sent us to you to take you as his wife.”
  41. Immediately she rose up and bowed with her face to the earth86 and said: “Here is your slave girl as a maidservant to wash the feet87 of the servants of my lord.”88
  42. Then Abʹi·gail89 hastened and rose up and went riding90 on the ass with five maids of hers walking behind her;[w] and she went accompanying[x] the messengers of David and then became his wife.
  43. ¶ David had also taken A·hinʹo·am91 from Jezʹre·el;92 and the women came to be, even both of them, his wives.93
  44. ¶ As for Saul, he had given Miʹchal94 his daughter, David’s wife, to Palʹti95 the son of Laʹish, who was from Galʹlim.96

When i do read some comments and seeing that its the same people that are supposed to be called believers but are talking ill of other denominations, it hurts. Let us all remember that We should judge not

The bible tells us to test the spirits. Satan disguises himself as angel of light. So yes some denomination are not teaching the truth. You are responsible for judging which ones are not. You have to judge the truth at all times. this is what the bible teaches

The NWT is a very good translation. Dr. Jason David BeDuhn PhD attests to that in his book Truth in Translation. drive.google.com/...5p16melHzg8/view

NWT is a false translation that takes away from the deity of Jesus !

Thank you for taking the time to provide this service. I like seeing the NASB on your web page in the same format as I read on paper. On other sites, the text area is smaller, and so I have to keep scrolling down to read and sometimes I lose the context. So I really appreciate the format.

As far as the NWT, you are certainly free to do whatever you think best with your own web pages. I'd suggest that you make a note anytime you have a translation that is associated with only one denomination or church, for example:
New World Translation (Jehovah's Witness version).

In Jesus' parable of the wheat and the tares. the main idea seems to be that you can't easily distinguish between God's people and not-God's people on this earth, so our Lord's response is to wait until they are shown to be the kind of people they are inside. But the NWT seems like false teaching to me. So I think the warning passages from Jesus' apostles are more applicable, as in 2 Peter 3:15-16, when he talks about Paul's writings:
"There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures."
And we also have the positive exhortations, as in 2 Timothy 2:15:
"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

Your suggestion regarding the denominational flagging is duly noted. But I can’t help but wonder, wouldn’t a Catholic also want “Protestant versions” marked as well?

As for the parable, I’m pretty sure the slaves were convinced in their own minds that they could tell the tares from the wheat. After all, aren’t they the ones who identified the problem in the first place? But the master obviously thought otherwise.

Furthermore, even at the time when Jesus himself was walking the earth, not everybody who claimed fellowship actually followed him causing John to inquire at Mark 9:39, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him . . . for he who is not against us is for us.”

Hello, question.. why have you included the NWT with other legitimate bible translations? Or why have you not atleast included a warning to readers? Don't you fear that someone could be influenced by the Watchtower's intentional heresies? Thank you.
