Chapter 10 of 1 SamuelNew World Translation (NWT)

  1. ¶ Samuel then took the flask1 of oil and poured it out upon his head and kissed2 him and said: “Is it not because Jehovah[a] has anointed you as a leader3 over his inheritance?4
  2. On your going away from me today you will certainly find two men close by the tomb of Rachel5 in the territory of Benjamin at Zelʹzah, and they will certainly say to you, ‘The she-asses that you have gone to look for have been found, but now your father has given up the matter of the she-asses6 and has become anxious about YOU men, saying: “What shall I do about my son?”’7
  3. And you must pass on from there still farther and come as far as the big tree of Taʹbor, and there there must encounter you three men going up to the [true] God at Bethʹel,8 one carrying three kids9 and one carrying three round loaves of bread10 and one carrying a large jar of wine.11
  4. And they will certainly ask about your welfare12 and give you two loaves, and you must accept them from their hand.
  5. It is after that that you will come to the hill of the [true] God,13 where there is a garrison14 of the Phi·lisʹtines. And it should come about that at the time of your coming there to the city, you will certainly meet a group of prophets15 coming down from the high place,16 and ahead of them a stringed instrument17 and tambourine18 and flute19 and harp,20 while they are speaking as prophets.
  6. And the spirit21 of Jehovah will certainly become operative upon you, and you will certainly speak as a prophet22 along with them and be changed into another man.
  7. And it must occur that when these signs23 come to you, do for yourself what your hand finds possible,24 because the [true] God is with you.25
  8. And you must go down ahead of me to Gilʹgal;26 and, look! I am going down to you to offer up burnt sacrifices, to render up communion27 sacrifices. Seven28 days you should keep waiting until my coming to you, and I shall certainly let you know what you should do.”
  9. ¶ And it occurred that as soon as he turned his shoulder to go from Samuel, God began changing the heart of his into another;29 and all these signs30 proceeded to come true on that day.
  10. So they went from there to the hill, and here there was a group of prophets to meet him; at once the spirit of God became operative upon him,31 and he began to speak as a prophet32 in the middle of them.
  11. And it came about that when all those knowing him formerly saw him, look! it was with prophets that he prophesied. Consequently the people said one to another: “What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”33
  12. Then a man from there answered and said: “But who is their father?” That is why it has become a proverbial34 saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
  13. ¶ At length he finished speaking as a prophet and came to the high place.
  14. Later the brother of Saul’s father said to him and to his attendant: “Where did YOU go?” Upon that he said: “To look for the she-asses,35 and we kept on going to see, but they were not [there]. So we came to Samuel.”
  15. At this Saul’s uncle said: “Do tell me, please, What did Samuel say to YOU men?”
  16. In turn Saul said to his uncle: “He told us unmistakably that the she-asses had been found.” And the matter of the kingship about which Samuel had talked, he did not tell him.36
  17. ¶ And Samuel proceeded to call the people together to Jehovah at Mizʹpah37
  18. and to say to the sons of Israel: “This is what Jehovah the God of Israel has said,38 ‘It was I who brought Israel up out of Egypt and who went delivering YOU from the hand of Egypt39 and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing YOU.40
  19. But YOU—today YOU have rejected YOUR God41 who was a savior to YOU out of all YOUR evils and YOUR distresses, and YOU went on to say: “No, but[b] a king is what you should put over us.” And now take YOUR stand before Jehovah by YOUR tribes42 and by YOUR thousands.’”[c]
  20. ¶ Accordingly Samuel had all the tribes of Israel draw near,43 and the tribe of Benjamin came to be picked.44
  21. Then he had the tribe of Benjamin draw near by its families, and the family of the Matʹrites came to be picked.[d]45 Finally Saul the son of Kish came to be picked.46 And they went looking for him, and he was not to be found.
  22. Hence they inquired47 further of Jehovah: “Has the man come here as yet?” To this Jehovah said: “Here he is, hidden48 among the luggage.”
  23. So they went running and took him from there. When he took his stand in the middle of the people, he was taller than all the other people from his shoulders upward.49
  24. Then Samuel said to all the people: “Have YOU seen the one whom Jehovah has chosen,50 that there is none like him among all the people?” And all the people began to shout and say: “Let the king live!”51
  25. ¶ Upon that Samuel spoke to the people about the rightful due of the kingship52 and wrote it in a book and deposited it before Jehovah. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his house.
  26. As for Saul himself, he went to his home at Gibʹe·ah,53 and the valiant men whose heart God had touched proceeded to go with him.54
  27. As for the good-for-nothing men,55 they said: “How will this one save us?”56 Accordingly they despised57 him, and they did not bring any gift to him.58 But he continued like one grown speechless.[e]59

FOOTNOTES

  1. ^ Here the Heb. scribe may have made an omission (homoeoteleuton). LXX reads: “Has Jehovah anointed you as a leader over his people, over Israel? And you will rule over Jehovah’s people, and you will save them out of the hand of their enemies round about. And this will be the sign to you that Jehovah”; Vgc is similar.
  2. ^ “Say: ‘No, but,’” LXXSyVg and 35 Heb. mss; M, “say to him: ‘But.’”
  3. ^ Or, “tribal subdivisions.”
  4. ^ LXX adds: “And they bring the family of the Matrites near, man by man.”
  5. ^ “But he continued like one grown speechless,” M; by an emendation in agreement with LXX, “And it came about approximately a month later.” LXX begins chapter 11 with these words.

When i do read some comments and seeing that its the same people that are supposed to be called believers but are talking ill of other denominations, it hurts. Let us all remember that We should judge not

The bible tells us to test the spirits. Satan disguises himself as angel of light. So yes some denomination are not teaching the truth. You are responsible for judging which ones are not. You have to judge the truth at all times. this is what the bible teaches

The NWT is a very good translation. Dr. Jason David BeDuhn PhD attests to that in his book Truth in Translation. drive.google.com/...5p16melHzg8/view

NWT is a false translation that takes away from the deity of Jesus !

Thank you for taking the time to provide this service. I like seeing the NASB on your web page in the same format as I read on paper. On other sites, the text area is smaller, and so I have to keep scrolling down to read and sometimes I lose the context. So I really appreciate the format.

As far as the NWT, you are certainly free to do whatever you think best with your own web pages. I'd suggest that you make a note anytime you have a translation that is associated with only one denomination or church, for example:
New World Translation (Jehovah's Witness version).

In Jesus' parable of the wheat and the tares. the main idea seems to be that you can't easily distinguish between God's people and not-God's people on this earth, so our Lord's response is to wait until they are shown to be the kind of people they are inside. But the NWT seems like false teaching to me. So I think the warning passages from Jesus' apostles are more applicable, as in 2 Peter 3:15-16, when he talks about Paul's writings:
"There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures."
And we also have the positive exhortations, as in 2 Timothy 2:15:
"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

Your suggestion regarding the denominational flagging is duly noted. But I can’t help but wonder, wouldn’t a Catholic also want “Protestant versions” marked as well?

As for the parable, I’m pretty sure the slaves were convinced in their own minds that they could tell the tares from the wheat. After all, aren’t they the ones who identified the problem in the first place? But the master obviously thought otherwise.

Furthermore, even at the time when Jesus himself was walking the earth, not everybody who claimed fellowship actually followed him causing John to inquire at Mark 9:39, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him . . . for he who is not against us is for us.”

Hello, question.. why have you included the NWT with other legitimate bible translations? Or why have you not atleast included a warning to readers? Don't you fear that someone could be influenced by the Watchtower's intentional heresies? Thank you.
