Chapter 3 of 1 John—New World Translation (NWT)

  1. ¶ See what sort of love1 the Father has given us, so that we should be called children of God;2 and such we are. That is why the world3 does not have a knowledge of us, because it has not come to know him.4
  2. Beloved ones, now we are children of God,5 but as yet it has not been made manifest what we shall be.6 We do know that whenever he[a] is made manifest7 we shall be like him,8 because we shall see him just as he is.9
  3. And everyone who has this hope set upon him purifies10 himself just as that one is pure.11
  4. ¶ Everyone who practices[b] sin12 is also practicing lawlessness,13 and so sin14 is lawlessness.
  5. YOU know too that that one was made manifest to take away [our][c] sins,15 and there is no sin16 in him.
  6. Everyone remaining in union17 with him does not practice sin;18 no one that practices sin has either seen him or come to know him.19
  7. Little children, let no one mislead YOU; he who carries on righteousness is righteous, just as that one is righteous.20
  8. He who carries on sin originates with the Devil,[d] because the Devil has been sinning from [the] beginning.[e]21 For this purpose the Son of God was made manifest,22 namely, to break up the works of the Devil.23
  9. ¶ Everyone who has been born[f] from God does not carry on sin,24 because His [reproductive] seed remains in such one, and he cannot practice sin, because he has been born from God.25
  10. The children of God and the children of the Devil are evident by this fact: Everyone who does not carry on righteousness26 does not originate with God, neither does he who does not love his brother.27
  11. For this is the message which YOU have heard from [the] beginning,[g]28 that we should have love for one another;29
  12. not like Cain, who originated with the wicked one and slaughtered30 his brother. And for the sake of what did he slaughter him? Because his own works were wicked,31 but those of his brother [were] righteous.32
  13. ¶ Do not marvel, brothers, that the world hates YOU.33
  14. We know we have passed over from death to life,34 because we love the brothers.35 He who does not love remains in death.36
  15. Everyone who hates37 his brother is a manslayer,38 and YOU know that no manslayer39 has everlasting life remaining in him.40
  16. By this we have come to know love,41 because that one surrendered his soul[h] for us;42 and we are under obligation to surrender [our] souls[i] for [our][j] brothers.43
  17. But whoever has this world’s means for supporting life44 and beholds his brother having need45 and yet shuts the door of his tender compassions upon him,46 in what way does the love of God remain in him?47
  18. Little children, let us love,48 neither in word nor with the tongue,49 but in deed50 and truth.51
  19. ¶ By this we shall know that we originate with the truth,52 and we shall assure[k] our hearts before him
  20. as regards whatever our hearts may condemn us in,53 because God is greater than our hearts and knows all things.54
  21. Beloved ones, if [our] hearts do not condemn [us], we have freeness of speech toward God;55
  22. and whatever we ask we receive from him,56 because we are observing his commandments and are doing the things that are pleasing in his eyes.57
  23. Indeed, this is his commandment, that we have faith in the name of his Son Jesus Christ58 and be loving one another,59 just as he gave us commandment.
  24. Moreover, he who observes his commandments remains in union with him, and he in union with such one;60 and by this we gain the knowledge that he is remaining in union with us,61 owing to the spirit62 which he gave us.

    When i do read some comments and seeing that its the same people that are supposed to be called believers but are talking ill of other denominations, it hurts. Let us all remember that We should judge not

      The bible tells us to test the spirits. Satan disguises himself as angel of light. So yes some denomination are not teaching the truth. You are responsible for judging which ones are not. You have to judge the truth at all times. this is what the bible teaches

    Thank you for taking the time to provide this service. I like seeing the NASB on your web page in the same format as I read on paper. On other sites, the text area is smaller, and so I have to keep scrolling down to read and sometimes I lose the context. So I really appreciate the format.

    As far as the NWT, you are certainly free to do whatever you think best with your own web pages. I'd suggest that you make a note anytime you have a translation that is associated with only one denomination or church, for example:
    New World Translation (Jehovah's Witness version).

    In Jesus' parable of the wheat and the tares. the main idea seems to be that you can't easily distinguish between God's people and not-God's people on this earth, so our Lord's response is to wait until they are shown to be the kind of people they are inside. But the NWT seems like false teaching to me. So I think the warning passages from Jesus' apostles are more applicable, as in 2 Peter 3:15-16, when he talks about Paul's writings:
    "There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures."
    And we also have the positive exhortations, as in 2 Timothy 2:15:
    "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

      Your suggestion regarding the denominational flagging is duly noted. But I can’t help but wonder, wouldn’t a Catholic also want “Protestant versions” marked as well?

      As for the parable, I’m pretty sure the slaves were convinced in their own minds that they could tell the tares from the wheat. After all, aren’t they the ones who identified the problem in the first place? But the master obviously thought otherwise.

      Furthermore, even at the time when Jesus himself was walking the earth, not everybody who claimed fellowship actually followed him causing John to inquire at Mark 9:39, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him . . . for he who is not against us is for us.”

    Hello, question.. why have you included the NWT with other legitimate bible translations? Or why have you not atleast included a warning to readers? Don't you fear that someone could be influenced by the Watchtower's intentional heresies? Thank you.
