Chapter 5 of MatthewNew American Standard Bible (NASB)

  1. 1When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on 2the [a]mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.
  2. 3He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
  3. ¶ “[b]4Blessed are the [c]poor in spirit, for 5theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  4. ¶ “Blessed are 6those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
  5. ¶ “Blessed are 7the [d]gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
  6. ¶ “Blessed are 8those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
  7. ¶ “Blessed are 9the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
  8. ¶ “Blessed are 10the pure in heart, for 11they shall see God.
  9. ¶ “Blessed are the peacemakers, for 12they shall be called sons of God.
  10. ¶ “Blessed are those who have been 13persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for 14theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  11. ¶ “Blessed are you when people 15insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
  12. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for 16in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
  13. ¶ “You are the salt of the earth; but 17if the salt has become tasteless, how [e]can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
  14. ¶ “You are 18the light of the world. A city set on a [f]hill cannot be hidden;
  15. 19nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a [g]basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
  16. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may 20see your good works, and 21glorify your Father who is in heaven.
  17. ¶ “Do not think that I came to abolish the 22Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
  18. For truly I say to you, 23until heaven and earth pass away, not [h]the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
  19. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches [i]others to do the same, shall be called least 24in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever [j]keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
  20. ¶ “For I say to you that unless your 25righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
  21. ¶ “26You have heard that [k]the ancients were told, ‘27YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be [l]liable to 28the court.’
  22. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be [m]guilty before 29the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘[n]You good-for-nothing,’ shall be [o]guilty before [p]30the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be [q]guilty enough to go into the [r]31fiery hell.
  23. Therefore if you are 32presenting your [s]offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
  24. leave your [t]offering there before the altar and go; first be 33reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your [u]offering.
  25. 34Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
  26. Truly I say to you, 35you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last [v]cent.
  27. ¶ “36You have heard that it was said, ‘37YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’;
  28. but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman 38with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
  29. 39If your right eye makes you [w]stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you [x]to lose one of the parts of your body, [y]than for your whole body to be thrown into [z]40hell.
  30. 41If your right hand makes you [aa]stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you [ab]to lose one of the parts of your body, [ac]than for your whole body to go into [ad]42hell.
  31. ¶ “It was said, ‘43WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE’;
  32. 44but I say to you that everyone who [ae]divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a [af]divorced woman commits adultery.
  33. ¶ “Again, 45you have heard that [ag]the ancients were told, ‘[ah]46YOU SHALL NOT [ai]MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR [aj]VOWS TO THE LORD.’
  34. But I say to you, 47make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is 48the throne of God,
  35. or by the earth, for it is the 49footstool of His feet, or [ak]by Jerusalem, for it is 50THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING.
  36. Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
  37. But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is [al]of 51evil.
  38. ¶ “52You have heard that it was said, ‘53AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.’
  39. But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but 54whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
  40. If anyone wants to sue you and take your [am]shirt, let him have your [an]coat also.
  41. Whoever [ao]forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
  42. 55Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.
  43. ¶ “56You have heard that it was said, ‘57YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR 58and hate your enemy.’
  44. But I say to you, 59love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
  45. so that you may [ap]be 60sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
  46. For 61if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
  47. If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
  48. Therefore [aq]62you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

When i do read some comments and seeing that its the same people that are supposed to be called believers but are talking ill of other denominations, it hurts. Let us all remember that We should judge not

The bible tells us to test the spirits. Satan disguises himself as angel of light. So yes some denomination are not teaching the truth. You are responsible for judging which ones are not. You have to judge the truth at all times. this is what the bible teaches

The NWT is a very good translation. Dr. Jason David BeDuhn PhD attests to that in his book Truth in Translation. drive.google.com/...5p16melHzg8/view

NWT is a false translation that takes away from the deity of Jesus !

Thank you for taking the time to provide this service. I like seeing the NASB on your web page in the same format as I read on paper. On other sites, the text area is smaller, and so I have to keep scrolling down to read and sometimes I lose the context. So I really appreciate the format.

As far as the NWT, you are certainly free to do whatever you think best with your own web pages. I'd suggest that you make a note anytime you have a translation that is associated with only one denomination or church, for example:
New World Translation (Jehovah's Witness version).

In Jesus' parable of the wheat and the tares. the main idea seems to be that you can't easily distinguish between God's people and not-God's people on this earth, so our Lord's response is to wait until they are shown to be the kind of people they are inside. But the NWT seems like false teaching to me. So I think the warning passages from Jesus' apostles are more applicable, as in 2 Peter 3:15-16, when he talks about Paul's writings:
"There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures."
And we also have the positive exhortations, as in 2 Timothy 2:15:
"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

Your suggestion regarding the denominational flagging is duly noted. But I can’t help but wonder, wouldn’t a Catholic also want “Protestant versions” marked as well?

As for the parable, I’m pretty sure the slaves were convinced in their own minds that they could tell the tares from the wheat. After all, aren’t they the ones who identified the problem in the first place? But the master obviously thought otherwise.

Furthermore, even at the time when Jesus himself was walking the earth, not everybody who claimed fellowship actually followed him causing John to inquire at Mark 9:39, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him . . . for he who is not against us is for us.”

Hello, question.. why have you included the NWT with other legitimate bible translations? Or why have you not atleast included a warning to readers? Don't you fear that someone could be influenced by the Watchtower's intentional heresies? Thank you.
