Book of Lamentations, Chapter 2
Chapter 2 of Lamentations
With a cloud in His anger!
He has 2cast from heaven to earth
The 3glory of Israel,
And has not remembered His 4footstool
In the day of His anger.
All the habitations of Jacob.
In His wrath He has 6thrown down
The strongholds of the daughter of Judah;
He has 7brought them down to the ground;
He has 8profaned the kingdom and its princes.
[a]All the 9strength of Israel;
He has 10drawn back His right hand
From before the enemy.
And He has 11burned in Jacob like a flaming fire
Consuming round about.
He has set His right hand like an adversary
And slain all that were 13pleasant to the eye;
In the tent of the daughter of Zion
He has 14poured out His wrath like fire.
He has 16swallowed up Israel;
He has swallowed up all its 17palaces,
He has destroyed its strongholds
And 18multiplied in the daughter of Judah
Mourning and moaning.
He has 19destroyed His appointed [c]meeting place.
The LORD has 20caused to be forgotten
The appointed feast and sabbath in Zion,
And He has 21despised king and priest
In the indignation of His anger.
He has abandoned His sanctuary;
He 23has delivered into the hand of the enemy
The walls of her palaces.
They have made a 24noise in the house of the LORD
As in the day of an appointed feast.
The wall of the daughter of Zion.
He has 25stretched out a line,
He has not restrained His hand from [e]destroying,
And He has 26caused rampart and wall to lament;
They have languished together.
He has destroyed and broken her bars.
Her king and her princes are among the nations;
The 28law is no more.
Also, her prophets find
29No vision from the LORD.
30Sit on the ground, they 31are silent.
They have thrown 32dust on their heads;
They have girded themselves with 33sackcloth.
The 34virgins of Jerusalem
Have bowed their heads to the ground.
My [f]36spirit is greatly troubled;
My [g]37heart is poured out on the earth
38Because of the [h]destruction of the daughter of my people,
When 39little ones and infants faint
In the streets of the city.
“40Where is grain and wine?”
As they faint like a wounded man
In the streets of the city,
As their 41life is poured out
On their mothers’ bosom.
To what 42shall I compare you,
O daughter of Jerusalem?
To what shall I liken you as I comfort you,
O 43virgin daughter of Zion?
For your [i]ruin is as vast as the sea;
Who can 44heal you?
False and foolish visions;
And they have not 46exposed your iniquity
So as to restore you from captivity,
But they have 47seen for you false and misleading [j]oracles.
48Clap their hands in derision at you;
They 49hiss and shake their heads
At the daughter of Jerusalem,
“Is this the city of which they said,
‘50The perfection of beauty,
51A joy to all the earth’?”
Have opened their mouths wide against you;
They hiss and 53gnash their teeth.
They say, “We have 54swallowed her up!
Surely this is the 55day for which we waited;
We have reached it, we have seen it.”
He has accomplished His word
Which He commanded from days of old.
He has thrown down 57without sparing,
And He has caused the enemy to 58rejoice over you;
He has 59exalted the [k]might of your adversaries.
“O 61wall of the daughter of Zion,
Let your 62tears run down like a river day and night;
Give yourself no relief,
Let [l]your eyes have no rest.
At the beginning of the night watches;
64Pour out your heart like water
Before the presence of the Lord;
Lift up your hands to Him
For the 65life of your little ones
Who are 66faint because of hunger
At the head of every street.”
With 67whom have You dealt thus?
Should women 68eat their [m]offspring,
The little ones who were [n]born healthy?
Should 69priest and prophet be slain
In the sanctuary of the Lord?
Lie 70young and old;
My 71virgins and my young men
Have fallen by the sword.
You have slain them in the day of Your anger,
You have slaughtered, 72not sparing.
My 73terrors on every side;
And there was 74no one who escaped or survived
In the day of the LORD’S anger.
Those 75whom I [o]bore and reared,
My enemy annihilated them.FOOTNOTES
