Chapter 51 of JeremiahNew American Standard Bible (NASB)

  1. ¶ Thus says the LORD:
    ¶ “Behold, I am going to arouse against Babylon
    And against the inhabitants of [a]Leb-kamai
    [b]The 1spirit of a destroyer.
  2. “I will dispatch [c]foreigners to Babylon that they may 2winnow her
    And may devastate her land;
    For on every side they will be opposed to her
    In the day of her calamity.
  3. [d]Let not [e]him who [f]3bends his bow [g]bend it,
    [h]Nor let him rise up in his 4scale-armor;
    So do not spare her young men;
    Devote all her army to destruction.
  4. “They will fall down [i]slain in the land of the Chaldeans,
    And 5pierced through in their streets.”
  5. ¶ For 6neither Israel nor Judah has been [j]forsaken
    By his God, the LORD of hosts,
    Although their land is 7full of guilt
    [k]Before the Holy One of Israel.
  6. 8Flee from the midst of Babylon,
    And each of you save his life!
    Do not be [l]9destroyed in her [m]punishment,
    For this is the 10LORD’S time of vengeance;
    He is going to 11render recompense to her.
  7. Babylon has been a golden 12cup in the hand of the LORD,
    Intoxicating all the earth.
    The 13nations have drunk of her wine;
    Therefore the nations are 14going mad.
  8. Suddenly 15Babylon has fallen and been broken;
    16Wail over her!
    17Bring [n]balm for her pain;
    Perhaps she may be healed.
  9. We applied healing to Babylon, but she was not healed;
    Forsake her and 18let us each go to his own country,
    For her judgment has 19reached to heaven
    And [o]towers up to the very skies.
  10. The LORD has 20brought [p]about our vindication;
    Come and let us 21recount in Zion
    The work of the LORD our God!
  11. 22Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers!
    The LORD has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes,
    Because His purpose is against Babylon to destroy it;
    For it is the 23vengeance of the LORD, vengeance for His temple.
  12. 24Lift up a [q]signal against the walls of Babylon;
    Post a strong guard,
    Station [r]sentries,
    Place men in ambush!
    For the LORD has both 25purposed and performed
    What He spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
  13. O you who 26dwell by many waters,
    Abundant in 27treasures,
    Your end has come,
    The [s]measure of your [t]28end.
  14. The 29LORD of hosts has sworn by Himself:
    “Surely I will fill you with a [u]population like 30locusts,
    And they will cry out with [v]shouts of victory over you.”
  15. It is 31He who made the earth by His power,
    Who established the world by His wisdom,
    And by His understanding He 32stretched out the heavens.
  16. When He utters His 33voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
    And He causes the 34clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
    He makes lightning for the rain
    And brings forth the 35wind from His storehouses.
  17. 36All mankind is stupid, devoid of knowledge;
    Every goldsmith is put to shame by his [w]idols,
    For his molten images are 37deceitful,
    And there is no breath in them.
  18. They are 38worthless, a work of mockery;
    In the time of their punishment they will perish.
  19. The 39portion of Jacob is not like these;
    For the [x]Maker of all is He,
    And of the [y]tribe of His inheritance;
    The 40LORD of hosts is His name.
  20. He says, “You are My [z]41war-club, My weapon of war;
    And with you I 42shatter nations,
    And with you I destroy kingdoms.
  21. “With you I 43shatter the horse and his rider,
    And with you I shatter the 44chariot and its rider,
  22. And with you I shatter 45man and woman,
    And with you I shatter old man and 46youth,
    And with you I shatter young man and virgin,
  23. And with you I shatter the shepherd and his flock,
    And with you I shatter the farmer and his team,
    And with you I shatter governors and prefects.
  24. ¶ “But I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of 47Chaldea for 48all their evil that they have done in Zion before your eyes,” declares the LORD.
  25. ¶ “Behold, 49I am against you, 50O destroying mountain,
    Who destroys the whole earth,” declares the LORD,
    “And I will stretch out My hand against you,
    And roll you down from the crags,
    And I will make you a 51burnt out mountain.
  26. “They will not take from you even a stone for a corner
    Nor a stone for foundations,
    But you will be 52desolate forever,” declares the LORD.
  27. 53Lift up a [aa]signal in the land,
    Blow a trumpet among the nations!
    Consecrate the nations against her,
    Summon against her the 54kingdoms of 55Ararat, Minni and 56Ashkenaz;
    Appoint a marshal against her,
    Bring up the 57horses like bristly locusts.
  28. Consecrate the nations against her,
    The kings of the Medes,
    [ab]Their governors and all [ac]their [ad]prefects,
    And every land of [ae]their dominion.
  29. So the 58land quakes and writhes,
    For the purposes of the LORD against Babylon stand,
    To make the land of Babylon
    [af]A 59desolation without inhabitants.
  30. The 60mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting,
    They stay in the strongholds;
    61Their strength is [ag]exhausted,
    They are becoming 62like women;
    Their dwelling places are set on fire,
    The 63bars of her gates are broken.
  31. One [ah]64courier runs to meet [ai]another,
    And one [aj]65messenger to meet [ak]another,
    To tell the king of Babylon
    That his city has been captured from end to end;
  32. The fords also have been seized,
    And they have burned the marshes with fire,
    And the men of war are terrified.
  33. ¶ For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
    ¶ “The daughter of Babylon is like a 66threshing floor
    At the time [al]it is stamped firm;
    Yet in a little while the time of 67harvest will come for her.”
  34. ¶ “Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has 68devoured me and crushed me,
    He has set me down like an 69empty vessel;
    He has 70swallowed me like a monster,
    He has filled his stomach with my delicacies;
    He has washed me away.
  35. “May the 71violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon,”
    The [am]inhabitant of Zion will say;
    And, “May my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,”
    Jerusalem will say.
  36. ¶ Therefore thus says the LORD,
    ¶ “Behold, I am going to 72plead your case
    And 73exact full vengeance for you;
    And 74I will dry up her [an]sea
    And make her fountain dry.
  37. 75Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals,
    An 76object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants.
  38. “They will roar together like 77young lions,
    They will growl like lions’ cubs.
  39. “When they become heated up, I will serve them their banquet
    And 78make them drunk, that they may become jubilant
    And may 79sleep a perpetual sleep
    And not wake up,” declares the LORD.
  40. “I will bring them down like [ao]lambs 80to the slaughter,
    Like rams together with male goats.
  41. ¶ “How [ap]81Sheshak has been captured,
    And 82the praise of the whole earth been seized!
    How Babylon has become an object of horror among the nations!
  42. “The [aq]83sea has come up over Babylon;
    She has been engulfed with its tumultuous waves.
  43. “Her cities have become an 84object of horror,
    A parched land and a desert,
    A land in which 85no man lives
    And through which no son of man passes.
  44. 86I will punish Bel in Babylon,
    And I will make what he has swallowed 87come out of his mouth;
    And the nations will no longer 88stream to him.
    Even the 89wall of Babylon has fallen down!
  45. ¶ “90Come forth from her midst, My people,
    And each of you 91save yourselves
    From the fierce anger of the LORD.
  46. “Now 92so that your heart does not grow faint,
    And you are not afraid at the 93report that will be heard in the land—
    For the report will come [ar]one year,
    And after that [as]another report in [at]another year,
    And violence will be in the land
    With 94ruler against ruler—
  47. Therefore behold, days are coming
    When I will punish the 95idols of Babylon;
    And her whole land will be 96put to shame
    And all her slain will fall in her midst.
  48. “Then 97heaven and earth and all that is in them
    Will shout for joy over Babylon,
    For 98the destroyers will come to her from the north,”
    Declares the LORD.
  49. 99Indeed Babylon is to fall for the slain of Israel,
    As also for Babylon 100the slain of all the earth have fallen.
  50. You 101who have escaped the sword,
    Depart! Do not stay!
    102Remember the LORD from afar,
    And let Jerusalem [au]come to your mind.
  51. 103We are ashamed because we have heard reproach;
    Disgrace has covered our faces,
    For 104aliens have entered
    The holy places of the LORD’S house.
  52. ¶ “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,
    “When I will punish her 105idols,
    And the mortally wounded will groan throughout her land.
  53. “Though Babylon should 106ascend to the heavens,
    And though she should fortify [av]her lofty stronghold,
    From 107Me destroyers will come to her,” declares the LORD.
  54. ¶ The 108sound of an outcry from Babylon,
    And of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!
  55. For the LORD is going to destroy Babylon,
    And He will make her loud [aw]noise vanish from her.
    And their 109waves will roar like many waters;
    The tumult of their voices [ax]sounds forth.
  56. For the 110destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon,
    And her mighty men will be captured,
    Their 111bows are shattered;
    For the LORD is a God of 112recompense,
    He will fully repay.
  57. “I will 113make her princes and her wise men drunk,
    Her governors, her prefects and her mighty men,
    That they may sleep a 114perpetual sleep and not wake up,”
    115Declares the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
  58. ¶ Thus says the LORD of hosts,
    ¶ “The broad 116wall of Babylon will be completely razed
    And her high 117gates will be set on fire;
    So the peoples will 118toil for nothing,
    And the nations become 119exhausted only for fire.”
  59. ¶ The [ay]message which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of 120Neriah, the grandson of Mahseiah, when he went with 121Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. (Now Seraiah was quartermaster.)
  60. So Jeremiah 122wrote in a single [az]scroll all the calamity which would come upon Babylon, that is, all these words which have been written concerning Babylon.
  61. Then Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “As soon as you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words aloud,
  62. and say, ‘You, O LORD, have [ba]promised concerning this place to 123cut it off, so that there will be 124nothing dwelling in it, [bb]whether man or beast, but it will be a perpetual desolation.’
  63. And as soon as you finish reading this [bc]scroll, you will tie a stone to it and 125throw it into the middle of the Euphrates,
  64. and say, ‘Just so shall Babylon sink down and 126not rise again because of the calamity that I am going to bring upon her; and they will become 127exhausted.’” 128Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

    The NWT adds words to the text that are not in the greek Manuscripts to fit it's own doctrinal position for example

    Compare the wording of the NWT and the NKJV at Colossians 1:15-17

    NKJV says

    15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

    NWT says

    15 He is the image of the invisible God,the firstborn OF all creation;16 because by means of him all OTHER things were created in the heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible,whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All OTHER things have been created through him and for him. 17 Also, he is before all OTHER things,and by means of him all OTHER things were made to exist,

    The word “other” is not in the Greek but they add it Why? So they can decieve their followers into thinking that Christ was created by the Father and that he then created other things, that is not what the Greek says.

      Truth is from God and those that follow him. As for lies? John8:44

      Kiamia, I noticed you used a modern version of kjv to make your point about the nwt.

      Why didn’t you use the original kjv of col1:15?

      Is it because it disproves your point? It proves the opposite of what you wrote?

      Here is kjv col1:15 ¶” Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn OF every creature:“

      Now I appeal to your Christian nature to correct your mistake as God is watching each of us, and let us bless the God of Jesus his father.

      Kjv 1Pe 1:3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ….

    Joshua, Jehovah’s Witnesses have never denied the deity of the Messiah in his prehuman existence. While on Earth he was fully 100% human. I do not mean he was a mere human, he was not affected by Adam’s unfaithful behavior, he was sinless.

    When i do read some comments and seeing that its the same people that are supposed to be called believers but are talking ill of other denominations, it hurts. Let us all remember that We should judge not

      The bible tells us to test the spirits. Satan disguises himself as angel of light. So yes some denomination are not teaching the truth. You are responsible for judging which ones are not. You have to judge the truth at all times. this is what the bible teaches

    The NWT is a very good translation. Dr. Jason David BeDuhn PhD attests to that in his book Truth in Translation. drive.google.com/...5p16melHzg8/view

      The NWT is Satanic filth to its very core.

      The JW Cult is Satanic to its very core.

      Praise Yahweh I will never be a victim of JW brainwashing. If I burn in Hell for eternity or I am ultimately annihilated so be it

      May Yahweh's curse rest on the Watchtower Society and its Satanic leadership

      NWT is a false translation that takes away from the deity of Jesus !

    Thank you for taking the time to provide this service. I like seeing the NASB on your web page in the same format as I read on paper. On other sites, the text area is smaller, and so I have to keep scrolling down to read and sometimes I lose the context. So I really appreciate the format.

    As far as the NWT, you are certainly free to do whatever you think best with your own web pages. I'd suggest that you make a note anytime you have a translation that is associated with only one denomination or church, for example:
    New World Translation (Jehovah's Witness version).

    In Jesus' parable of the wheat and the tares. the main idea seems to be that you can't easily distinguish between God's people and not-God's people on this earth, so our Lord's response is to wait until they are shown to be the kind of people they are inside. But the NWT seems like false teaching to me. So I think the warning passages from Jesus' apostles are more applicable, as in 2 Peter 3:15-16, when he talks about Paul's writings:
    "There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures."
    And we also have the positive exhortations, as in 2 Timothy 2:15:
    "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

      Your suggestion regarding the denominational flagging is duly noted. But I can’t help but wonder, wouldn’t a Catholic also want “Protestant versions” marked as well?

      As for the parable, I’m pretty sure the slaves were convinced in their own minds that they could tell the tares from the wheat. After all, aren’t they the ones who identified the problem in the first place? But the master obviously thought otherwise.

      Furthermore, even at the time when Jesus himself was walking the earth, not everybody who claimed fellowship actually followed him causing John to inquire at Mark 9:39, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him . . . for he who is not against us is for us.”

    Hello, question.. why have you included the NWT with other legitimate bible translations? Or why have you not atleast included a warning to readers? Don't you fear that someone could be influenced by the Watchtower's intentional heresies? Thank you.

      Please site these intentional heresies. I am well versed in the watch tower outline and agree they are in many ways incorrect but i also bet i can point many out from EVERY established or main denomination. There is much to learn from them all as one who drinks milk?

      Judge not lest ye be judged, that is not to pass judgement on you either brother.

      I debate with scripture. I don't hold it to be true that Michael is Y'Shua HaMeshiach but I also firmly hold it to be true that our G-d and Heavenly Father are not the word encarnate and only begotten son.

      I love not seeing "lord" which i relate to baal. I feel the catholic church is a satanic establishment and I am aware a freemason started the hovies but there are evil in high places and our fight is also with principalities.

      What i'm saying is that in my darkest hours, those two were some of if not the only ones who would bring a Bible and eucharist and pray with me.

      We all fall short of the glory of G-d.

      Don't forget the NWT was recognized as the most accurate translation on Jeopardy.

      Lastly, this is different I noted than the NWT i have read and am very familiar with. Pull up the watchtower page and compare. I truly look forward to getting this one!
