Book of Amos, Chapter 6
Amos 6 NASB - New American Standard Bible Chapter 6 of Amos—New American Standard Bible (NASB)
- ¶ 1Woe to those who are at ease in Zion
And to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria,
The 2distinguished men of the foremost of nations,
To whom the house of Israel comes. - Go over to 3Calneh and look,
And go from there to 4Hamath the great,
Then go down to 5Gath of the Philistines.
Are [a]they better than these kingdoms,
Or is their territory greater than yours? - Do you 6put off the day of calamity,
And would you 7bring near the seat of violence? - ¶ Those who recline on beds of ivory
And sprawl on their 8couches,
And 9eat lambs from the flock
And calves from the midst of the stall, - Who improvise to the sound of the harp,
And like David have [b]composed 10songs for themselves, - Who 11drink wine from [c]sacrificial bowls
While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils,
Yet they have not 12grieved over the ruin of Joseph. - Therefore, they will now 13go into exile at the head of the exiles,
And the 14sprawlers’ [d]banqueting will [e]pass away. - ¶ The Lord [f]GOD has 15sworn by Himself, the LORD God of hosts has declared:
“I 16loathe the arrogance of Jacob,
And [g]detest his 17citadels;
Therefore I will 18deliver up the city and [h]all it contains.” - ¶ And it will be, if 19ten men are left in one house, they will die.
- Then one’s [i]uncle, or his [j]20undertaker, will lift him up to carry out his bones from the house, and he will say to the one who is in the innermost part of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” Then he will [k]answer, “21Keep quiet. For [l]the name of the LORD is 22not to be mentioned.”
- For behold, the LORD is going to 23command that the 24great house be smashed to pieces and the small house to fragments.
- ¶ Do horses run on rocks?
Or does one plow [m]them with oxen?
Yet you have turned 25justice into poison
And the fruit of righteousness into [n]wormwood, - You who rejoice in [o]26Lodebar,
[p]And say, “Have we not 27by our own strength taken [q]Karnaim for ourselves?” - “For behold, 28I am going to raise up a nation against you,
O house of Israel,” declares the LORD God of hosts,
“And they will afflict you from the 29entrance of Hamath
To the 30brook of the Arabah.”
