Book of Proverbs, Chapter 1
Chapter 1 of Proverbs
¶ To discern the words of understanding;
¶ In righteousness and justice and equity;
¶ To the young man knowledge and discretion:
¶ And that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels:
¶ The words of the wise, and their [b]dark sayings.
¶ But the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
¶ And forsake not the [d]law of thy mother:
¶ And chains about thy neck.
¶ Consent thou not.
¶ Let us lay wait for blood;
¶ Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;
¶ [e]And whole, as those that go down into the pit;
¶ We shall fill our houses with spoil;
¶ We will all have one purse:
¶ Refrain thy foot from their path:
¶ And they make haste to shed blood.
¶ In the sight of any bird:
¶ They lurk privily for their own lives.
¶ It taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
¶ She uttereth her voice in the broad places;
¶ At the entrance of the gates,
¶ In the city, she uttereth her words:
¶ And scoffers delight them in scoffing,
¶ And fools hate knowledge?
¶ Behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you;
¶ I will make known my words unto you.
¶ I have stretched out my hand, and no man hath regarded;
¶ And would none of my reproof:
¶ I will mock when your fear cometh;
¶ And your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind;
¶ When distress and anguish come upon you.
¶ They will seek me [i]diligently, but they shall not find me:
¶ And did not choose the fear of Jehovah,
¶ They despised all my reproof.
¶ And be filled with their own devices.
¶ And the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.
¶ And shall be quiet without fear of evil.FOOTNOTES
